practice entry 12. I was asked by an organization practice entry 12.

I was asked by an organization to share tips on how to acknowledge the roots of yoga in a movement / breath class setting. I did so, but ultimately the contents of my contribution didn’t meet their needs, and they published something entirely different.

Many of the strategies that were offered as ways of acknowledgment were ahistorical and colonially informed, so I will continue to respond generally to the ideas that were presented.

This is my practice of harm interruption (ahiṃsā).

To those who think acknowledging the roots of yoga can be achieved by using Sanskrit..

Especially to those who say that naming bodily postures in Sanskrit is a great way to practice acknowledging yoga’s roots..

It isn’t.

Patañjali does not name a single bodily posture other than seated stillness in his contribution to moral philosophy.

Beyond this, just knowing a language (or some words of a language) does not mean you understand the discipline that you are operating within.

Disciplines - like philosophy or physics - have nothing intrinsically to do with the original languages they were written in. Their concepts cross language barriers when an expert translator in that discipline does that work.

Acknowledging the roots of yoga by speaking Sanskrit is like acknowledging the roots of western astronomy by speaking Greek. It’s nice and all, but it’s not necessary to understanding the discipline.

Bottom line: if using Sanskrit is one of your main ways of acknowledging the roots of yoga, it’s performative.

Yoga educators: let’s do better. You know who doesn’t have to acknowledge the roots of yoga? People who actually teach yoga: moral philosophy as described by Patañjali in the Yoga Sūtra.

A couple of Sanskrit words for postures will never make up for the complete absence of yoga in your ‘yoga class.’

practice entry 11. Learning about the intellectua practice entry 11.

Learning about the intellectual history of the world isn’t sexy (to some 😉 [winking emoji])

BUT

let me tell you, it really fricken simplifies things.

Because when you can understand that FROM ITS ORIGIN the western tradition of thought describes moral values as involving human relationships in a human community defined by common language, then you can easily understand how things like
anthropocentrism,
communitariansm,
nationalism, and
proselytization
get off the ground.

These are the intellectual roots that justify non-human animal abuse, continued investment in fossil fuels and other regimes of resource extraction, white supremacy, war, conversion ‘therapy,’ residential ‘schools’.. the list goes on.

This isn’t rocket science. We can clearly trace the intellectual roots back to their source.

And once you understand that, its super easy to see a solution.

Because all you have to do is look to a different intellectual tradition where moral values AREN’T about humans in community or common language.

And all of a sudden you find ways of living and aiming that VALUE DIVERSITY.

All of a sudden you give yourself the opportunity to understand People who you don’t share anything in common with, instead of forcing them into something YOU already understand so that they are intelligible to YOU.. AKA COLONIZATION.

I’ll say it again, this isn’t rocket science.

You just get to realize when you are making a choice to affirm imperialism. And then you get to practice choosing differently.

THIS is where the Yoga Sūtra begins:

Either you (a) choose to take responsibility for controlling your (moral) character of thought, creating space for all People to thrive, or you (b) choose to default to causation, identifying yourself with your current, contingent perspective, understanding everything from that vantage. (Yoga Sūtra I.2-.4)

This is a choice that you are making at this very second, and in every second. Which are you choosing?

DECOLONIZE YOGA Some thoughts as I warm up some s DECOLONIZE YOGA

Some thoughts as I warm up some soup.

Patañjali describes the eight limbs of yoga as an upāya – a remedy – for if you are having trouble practicing the ethical considerations outlined in the first half of the Yoga Sūtra. (Yoga Sūtra II.26)

This means that what yoga actually is is described before the eight limbs are described.

So to everyone who is teaching āsana and prāṇāyāma without their ethical context: you are perpetuating the colonization of a South Asian intellectual tradition.

You are doing the work of western imperialism, disempowering a way of living and aiming that has the potential to overthrow systems of harm.

You are doing the world a disservice.

Please stop.

Or at least stop calling it yoga.

And if you have a problem stopping, I invite you to notice (1) which systems of harm are exerting force on you, and (2) that you are upholding and reinforcing those systems of harm if you don’t stop.

There is no neutral.

And to everyone who wants to practice yoga, know that the vast majority of certified yoga teacher trainings are just western imperialism disguised in Sanskrit, so the vast majority of teachers won’t actually be teaching yoga.

If you want to practice yoga, you have to learn philosophy, so I invite you to skip the studio and start learning about the intellectual history of the world.

Yesterday was Red Dress Day. I am one day late to Yesterday was Red Dress Day.

I am one day late to post because I needed a red shirt. (This one is by @decolonialclothing, shout-out to them for their incredible work in this world.)

However, I also think it’s important to recognize that for settlers like myself, using a day like May 5 to make a post about justice can be performative.

Red Dress Day, also known as MMIWG2S Awareness Day, honours the thousands of missing and murdered Indigenous women, girls, 2 spirit and gender diverse people in so-called Canada.

I could share the stats about the ridiculous levels of violence that we see inflicted on these people.

And, when we choose to practice yoga as a way of living and aiming, truth (satya) comes AFTER harm interruption (ahimsā). (Yoga Sūtra II.30)

The harm is the more basic thing here. When you take truths that arise out of harm seriously, you are masking the CHOICES that YOU MADE that have led to the creation of those truths.

Practicing yoga allows you to SEE YOUR ROLE IN CREATING THE FACTS.

Yoga PSA: If you are not interrupting harm, you are complicit. There is no neutral.

To my fellow settlers: What concrete actions are you actively going to take before May 5 2023 to dismantle the harm of western imperialism that inflicts such violence on Indigenous women, girls, 2 spirit and gender diverse people?

If you are wondering where to start, here are two recommendations:

1. Start giving your privilege back to the Indigenous communities whose land you are occupying immediately, in the form of your resources: land, money, effort, time. This is going to be uncomfortable. It’s supposed to be. It’s you experiencing the actual, less privileged (aka less subsidized) cost of living life.

2. Learn about the intellectual history of the world, so that you can GIVE YOURSELF THE CHOICE to think outside of the western tradition of thought. To do this, check out the Yoga Moral Philosophy course by @yogaphilosophy_com.

This work will not happen in one day.

It will not happen passively.

Living a yogic life is living a political life, and you need to put in the effort to practice. This benefits all People, yourself included.

Happy New Moon and solar eclipse! This year in No Happy New Moon and solar eclipse!

This year in North America, the tropical Taurus lunar cycle spans April 30 - May 30 2022.

At each New Moon, the inspiration from

the Moon [beauty, connection, nourishment, sensitivity]
and
the Sun [constancy, order, protection from harm, self-confidence]
come together in a unique section of the sky.

You can treat this conjunction as a seed moment, wherein you can use the unique inspiration of each lunation's theme to initiate a potent, rhythmic flow to practicing living life.

In addition, at this moment from our perspective on Earth, the Moon is partially blocking the light of the Sun, eclipsing it.
Symbolically, this is like the lunar values (listed above) blocking the clarity that comes from the solar values, which can be uncomfortable.

When I consider all of the areas of my life that I need to practice improvement in, I sometimes get overwhelmed. Following the lunar cycle’s inspiration is a way for me to focus my practice, keeping me grounded and balanced as I explore taking responsibility for my life (aka practicing yoga).

Inspiration Station:

- For me, the ruling planet (graha) inspires the Core Concepts of the cycle. Taurus (Vṛṣabha) is ruled by Venus (Śukra), bringing with it an invitation to practice focusing on abundance, comfort, expertise, and self-expression over this cycle.

- The zodiac sign (rāśi) determines how the Core Concepts are flavoured / characterized. In particular, note that Taurus is the REFLECTIVE form of Venus, rather than the active form (Libra). Characteristics of Taurus include sensuality, stability, dependability, stillness, pleasure and acquisition.

- The Archetype of Taurus from the reclaim. program is The (Practical) Artist.

Check out today’s blog post (linked in bio) for a deeper dive into these themes and how you can work with them over the next four weeks!

Also, the post includes some special eclipse-related considerations as they can take us in different symbolic directions at the New and Full Moons.

I am wishing you a beautiful, reflective and skilled Taurus cycle. Thank you for your practice.

With love, in practice,
Tara

practice entry 9. Yesterday I was thanking someon practice entry 9.

Yesterday I was thanking someone and I wrote in the email something like,
“This course has changed my life.”

And even as I wrote it it felt weird to say, but my life has indeed changed so I said it.

Later I realized why it felt weird: neither this person nor the course changed my life.

It was (a) the space this person created and (b) that I chose to occupy it that changed my life.

It is my practice of living and learning that changes my life. Change doesn’t come without me taking responsibility.

So I was thanking someone for creating the space for me to do so.

For me, this is the mark of an incredible teacher.

This post goes out to all the ethics (western tradition), dharma (South Asian tradition, and Taoist (East Asian tradition) teachers who make learning how to live and aim the student’s responsibility.

Who don’t cater to students or popular expectations,
Who don’t white wash systems of harm,
but teach the content.

Who don’t infuse the content with their beliefs or perspective but share the philosophy and give people space to explore.

This is the teacher I want to be.

I honour you and I thank you for your inspiration. I see you.

In practice,
Tara
